LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Public Land Sale

Launceston City Council

SURPRISE, surprise aldermen at the Launceston City Council meeting on Monday, December 4 voted to sell land - the car park at the Gorge to Josef Chromy at a negotiable price but not less than valuation.

The ratepayers will receive a business like approach to the sale.

At the same meeting council voted for a $36m development in the CBD committing $10m from ratepayers and $26m from the federal and state government.

At the November 9 meeting, council voted in principle to give to UTAS free old velodrome and Willis St car parks.

Had council sold the land to UTAS for say $10m that would have offset the $10m CBD development and been neutral free cost to ratepayers.

The haphazard business approach by aldermen on behalf of ratepayers leaves a lot to be desired.
