Kings Meadows Get A New Toilet

Kings Meadows public toilet project flushed with funds thanks to State Government grant:
A community-led call for a new public toilet block at Kings Meadows will be answered after the Council received a $50,000 grant for the project from the State Government.
The new toilet block will be built on council-owned land next door to the Kings Meadows Hotel.
The $90,000 project will service the Kings Meadows shopping precinct and create a link to the Kings Meadows Rivulet walkway with the construction of a pedestrian bridge across the rivulet.

Mayor Albert van Zetten said the new facilities would better cater for the thriving precinct and all those who live, work and shop there.
The go-ahead can be attributed to the efforts of the local community who presented a petition calling for new public toilets - containing more than 1180 signatures - to the Council earlier this year.
"We took on board the concerns of all those signatories and we've now been successful in securing this $50,000 grant from the State Government's Community Infrastructure Fund to make the project a reality," Mayor van Zetten said.
"This is a great example of effective community engagement — the people spoke and the Council listened. I commend all those involved, and thank the State Government for this generous funding commitment."
Mayor van Zetten said that currently the rivulet walkway had no link to the open space area and proposed toilet block site next to the hotel, forcing users to walk through the hotel car park to gain access to Hobart Rd.
"The new pedestrian bridge will provide direct and safer access via this open section of Council-owned land," he said.
"It's a win-win situation for everyone - residents, walkers, shoppers and businesses."
Work on the project is expected to start later in the year.

Now in terms of 'Community Engagement' this poses as many questions as it might earn bouquets. Ratepayers might remember that petition that asked the Council to rescind its decision to gift public land to UTas ,and:
  • that had 1500 signatures; and
  • that council totally ignored; and
  • that the departing GM called the gift good town planning; and
  • that despite all the planning provisions that are being proposed to be circumvented; and
  • that the money required would go a long way towards fixing up a great deal of Launceston's sewerage outflow to the river and, and , and!!
Great Kings Meadows gets its much  needed public toilet and Inveresk gets a university to move four Kilometers and boost rates by quite probably $100s PA.
